When we introduced “Break the Scam Spell,” we wanted to give a name to a challenge at the heart of scam prevention: helping someone escape a scammer’s influence.
A person caught in a scam may already have received a warning. They may have spoken with their bank, heard concerns from their family, or encountered evidence that something is wrong. Yet the scammer’s story can still feel more convincing.
Understanding that influence, and knowing how to interrupt it, is central to the work we do at Charm.
On September 8, 2026, BREAK THE SCAM SPELL® became a registered U.S. trademark of Charm Security. It is a milestone for a phrase that captures both the problem we are tackling and the outcome we are working toward.
What we mean by the “scam spell”
Scammers exploit human vulnerabilities to shape how people think, feel, and act. They build trust, impersonate authority, create urgency, and use fear or emotional connection to keep someone engaged.
The “scam spell” describes that state of influence. From the outside, a request to transfer money or share sensitive information may look suspicious. For the person experiencing the manipulation, it can feel necessary, reasonable, or even protective.
Breaking that influence requires understanding why the person believes the scammer and what could help them reconsider.
Turning understanding into action
